The rising 8th grade at my school is so special: they are thoughtful, hilarious, and frequently brilliant. They love k-pop and disco (!) and Netflix and especially being trusted to have mature, thoughtful discussions and debates in class. They also are black & brown kids growing up in the poorest congressional district in the nation, and their literacy and language proficiency, to a degree, reflects the struggle they and their families encounter making their way through the world.
My overarching goal for the year is to foster and/or support a deep and enduring love of literature in my students.
They were my first 6th graders at Bronx Latin, and I am so excited that my first year teaching 8th grade ELA (that's English Language Arts to anyone as elderly as I!) is with them.
Students will be responsible for completing 20+ minutes of independent reading every night for homework. I want them to develop a reading habit, and to practice applying our in-class learning to books they choose independently.
To help them find excellent books that might appeal to all sorts of different students with varied interests, I want to build a great library in class of books they can borrow.
That means that even if a student doesn't have a library card or a Kindle or a bookstore or shelves full of books at home, they will always have access to something new to read.
Please help me build the foundation of 50 awesome middle-grade -appropriate books, so that I can help them learn to love to read!
