My students need a classroom rug to sit on while we read stories about art and discuss what we will do in class each day.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
We are a neighborhood school in the middle of our city's art district. I am so excited to be the very first art teacher at our school! As I am in the process of setting up our new art room, I have been using my creativity to create a lot of art opportunities with a small amount of resources.
My students are fearless explorers of their creativity.
Our choice-based art classroom is a space where they can take risks and try new things. Students respond to art challenges by choosing the art supplies and subject for their artwork.
My Project
Last year, when I wanted to read a story about art to my students, older kids would help me move a table so that my younger ones could sit on the floor. The floor is dirty, and we waste a lot of time figuring out where everyone needs to sit.
Our carpet time is key to teaching my students about artists and giving them a space to plan their project for the day.
Last year, I didn't have space for a carpet in our small portable. I have been working hard with our custodian to clear out the room next door. Countless hours of sorting, boxing, and moving items that had been forgotten in storage have paid off. We now have a space for an actual carpet for our carpet time!
I love that this carpet has a variety of colors and shapes that will reinforce our art learning. Since each of our groups is named after a different color of the rainbow, it will be quick and easy for my students to figure out where they need to sit!
