Celebrating Black History Month

This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.

My Students

I teach high school students in various grades. Our art program began a little over 4 years ago, with students that had never taken an art class or had not taken an art class since elementary school. Over the past 4 years, I have seen how skills have developed tremendously. Students take what they learn in my classes and incorporate them in other classes. The ones who really enjoy the classes are always eager to show their other teachers what they have made and don't mind giving their work to teachers to display in their classrooms.

With the little experience most of my students have had in the art room, I am proud of the progress they have made overall in the 4 years of our program's existence.

My Project

The materials I have chosen are crucial to my students' learning. Every year is a struggle in trying to get materials for my classroom. Our department does not have a set budget so I have to rely on administration to buy materials, whenever they get a chance, or I have to come out of pocket to fulfill needs. Whether we are working with watercolor or learning how to create perspective, each art project we do is special.

I want my students to have the best and do their best.

In order for them to do that, they need the necessary materials. And with DonorsChoose's help, I believe we can continue to strive for excellence.
