This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
Majority of my boys do not have a true love for reading. My goal is to foster independent readers that feel comfortable choosing and reading books, as well as sharing what they read.
They are 10 and 11-year old 5th grade boys who come from low socioeconomic areas, some of single parent mom only and some of single parent male only families.
They have a lot of ambition and determination, which I help foster and nature through the love of reading. This group of boys have so much potential, but just need guidance in reaching it. Overall, our school has educators like myself who value student learning and have a love for teaching and educating young minds despite knowing that 95% of students receive free or reduced lunch.
My Project
While incorporating non-traditional reading environments, my students will be able to use the donated pillows, rugs, and blankets to be able to relax, and be comfortable, all while reading, writing, or using their technology to increase meaningful time on task and their reading skills.
These donations will make these boys feel like they are at peace when they enter the doors, and any of their other issues they come to my class with all vanish while in the walls of room 403.
They will also help them to develop a life-long love for reading.
