This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
I teach 1st grade in a rural area of Virginia that has high levels of poverty and low levels of parental involvement. Many of our children are at-risk and come from families that don't understand the value of education.
Our district and our parents are often unable to provide even the basics such as pencils, crayon, paper, and gluesticks needed for our classroom. I am able to provide most of these basics myself but technology items that would enhance the learning experience are beyond what my budget can absorb.
My current reading and research indicates that children are able to learn and retain much more when it is presented with music. I would love to have an Apple iPod on which to download curriculum based learning songs and books which the children could listen to during our "Listen to Reading" time.
Your donation will make it possible for my students to have the benefits and joy of being "read to" and hearing fluent reading. It will also provide these at risk children with a memory peg in the form of curriculum based songs on which to build their knowledge bank.
