I teach a large group of awesome special education students: 9 first graders, 6 second graders, and 8 third graders. My students have been identified with special needs including autism, learning disabilities, emotional disabilities, hearing impaired, visually impaired, and other health impairments. I also work with many regular education students that need additional support.
I teach in an inner-city Title I school in Indiana where 100% of our students receive free breakfast and lunch each day.
Our school is in a high poverty neighborhood. Many of my students are being raised by grandparents, foster families, or single parents. For each of my students, I strive to make our school and classroom a safe, comfortable, and fun place for them to learn.
My Project
My students need an iPad with a protective case. This iPad will allow my students to practice skills in a fun, interactive way. Special needs students need a lot of practice in order to master skills. Games and apps that are available on iPads will provide great ways for students to practice their skills.
The iPad will also be used during small group instruction so that I can focus my attention and instruction on a specific student or a pair of students who need some more individualized instruction.
If we have an iPad to use during these times, each student will be able to spend all their time engaged and learning.
