Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My school is a Title 1 public K-8 outside Portland, OR. We have just under 1,000 students from mostly low socio-economic backgrounds. Our free and reduced lunch percentage is just about 90%. In addition, our students come from homes with 47 different home languages giving us a high percentage of ELL students. Despite these challenges we are the highest performing Title 1 school in the district!
I am lucky to teach 24 (15 ELL) wonderful, kind, inquisitive second graders in a two-way Spanish immersion program.
Most have come in behind grade level, but they work hard and make great progress in class! They love to write stories, draw and play math games!
My Project
I would love to bring the technology of an iPad with an Apple Pencil (and a heavy duty case, of course!) into our class to allow students to be able to showcase their learning. Having this in the classroom is as close to writing with pencil and paper as new technology allows and will help students seamlessly move to writing on a tablet just as they would as on paper.
These technologies make sharing accessible to all students and allow them all to showcase the great work they do, without the fear of moving up in front of the class.
We are lucky to have a lot of kids in our class who love the spotlight and are always willing to share, but I want to ensure that all of my students get a chance to be the star and show what they are capable of. Whether it be showing their math work, modeling writing examples or taking pictures of and transmitting their work, this technology will give my students the confidence to show their work.
As a teacher, It will also aid in being able to work everywhere in the classroom while providing support for those students that need it most. No longer will I be tied to the whiteboard or document camera, I will be able to move wherever I need in the class while maintaining the integrity and pace of my lesson.
Finally, my kids live in a technological world. They often pick up new technologies faster than most of their older teachers. They also have a love of and excitement for learning when technology is involved. Bringing in the latest technology to the class keeps them engaged and in turn improves student outcomes!
