An Apple for Annotating

Help me give my students an interactive experience for reading, annotating, and discussing literature. While the iPad projects onto the whiteboard, the Apple Pencil directly edits documents and lessons, allowing students to mirror what they see.

My Project

My students are immersed in classical literature. We strive to read and discuss stories that have withheld the test of time, to inspire and spark thinking regarding universal themes. So far this year, we have explored ideas such as perseverance, as shown by Helen Keller in "The Miracle Worker"; work ethic and determination, as shown by Buck in "The Call of the Wild"; Scrooge's wild transformation into a man of generosity in "A Christmas Carol"; and most recently, the tricky concepts of honor and ambition, as presented by the characters of "Julius Caesar".

My goal is to make the process of reading, annotating, and discussing seamless, allowing my students to commit these "lessons of literature" to heart, to then head out into the world and become the leaders that will influence generations to come.

I have requested an iPad and Apple Pencil to be able to project our "great books" onto the whiteboard with the ability to annotate directly. Notes can be taken directly on the document via the Pencil to iPad, modeling the lessons for our students, enabling an interactive experience for all. This eliminates the need for a document camera and multiple paper copies to be annotated for each class period.

Other lessons, such as grammar and essay writing will benefit from this model as well—as any of these lessons can be projected and modeled directly to the whiteboard for all. By having this setup, the students will have increased productivity, as these "marked up" lessons will be able to be saved and sent home via email for reference. Students who miss the lesson or need more time will always be able to stay in the loop.
