My students come from a small, rural community. Our district is a Title I School with sixty-two percent of the population qualifying for free or reduced-price lunch. We are also seeing a growing population of ELL (English Language Learner) students from the Congo. Second grade is such an exciting group of mixed interests, abilities, and goals. Some of my students are learning to read, write, and count, while others are learning to explore, use critical thinking skills, and conduct experiments.
My goal is to give every student an equal chance to learn as much as they possibly can.
Our school population is changing. We are encountering more students who are coming to us with little or no support at home.
As my students make gains in my classroom, they begin to find pride in themselves. My classroom is about building skills. The work we do in this classroom is building relationships, staying with the group, following directions, and accessing general education content in different ways. We celebrate little wins together each day. My students walk into class every day full of life, ready to learn, and excited for what is in store for them. I want them to love coming.
My classroom needs an iPad with case to utilize the math and reading apps that came with our newly purchased curriculum. As an educator I believe kids learn best directly working with their teacher and other students, but these apps interactively support the practice my students need.
Due to staff shortages I have a group of students who will not receive the services they need for extra support in reading.
Our district suggests we use 2 new reading apps, Stride Academy and Teach your Monster to Read for extra support in the classroom. Our new math program, Bridges Math has a workplace for students to visit and play interactive apps that support the hands-on teaching I am doing.
