I am a second-grade teacher in a high poverty elementary school. Our school specializes in providing a well-rounded education to students who face emotional and behavioral challenges. I have 70 amazing 7 and 8 year olds. They are a very diverse group of students in both socioeconomic status and learning abilities. Many of the students in our school come from poverty, broken homes, single parent families, and some endure more extreme emotional baggage in a day than I could ever imagine in a lifetime. When my students walk through my door they know they are safe, loved and cared for. Because of that, my kids work hard for me to become successful leaders.
My Project
Keeping my students moving is beyond important! Each day we aim to get at least 20 extra minutes of movement in each day (in addition to recess and P.E). When students move more often they are more focused on classroom material throughout the day and retain more. Most students love to keep moving; however, the extra incentive of wearing an Apple watch and tracking movement throughout the day grabs the attention and increases participation among the students who typically don't like to move as frequently.
We want an Apple Watch so students can track their movement, such as running, jumping, skipping, and jumping jacks to try to beat records or other classmates if they choose to compete.
Keeping students physically active, learning, and integrating technology are just a few benefits of incorporating an Apple watch into my classroom. Having this watch will motivate more students to participate each day. Please help me motivate my students and get more students involved in good health!
