These days, technology in the classroom is much more than learning to type or playing Oregon Trail. All students deserve access to new technologies if they are going to be truly prepared for the world in which they live.
Ours is a specialized school, serving students with a variety of disabilities, many of whom only access technological tools at school.
In one classroom, ages may range as much as abilities, and differentiation is a key element to successful teaching and learning.
My Project
I am requesting an Apple Ipad Mini for use in the classroom. As the rest of our computers are Apple, this tablet would be the easiest to integrate. As my class would have a maximum of twelve students, all of whom have different needs, this device would be a dream come true for differentiation. I could download animated story books for an instant listening center, math and literacy applications at all different levels, and even plug it into our smartboard. Many of the students struggle with attention, but focus more easily when a task is related to technology. Rather than having to provide positive reinforcement for learning, learning itself would be the positive reinforcement with this tablet.
My students, like any, need to be prepared for the world outside of the classroom.
Increasing their technological access and experiences will directly impact their ability to function in society to their fullest potential. Please help provide us with this invaluable tool. Put an ipad in a child's hand and a smile on their face!
