I teach within a pubic school in rural Southwest Virginia. Every single one of my students are offered free breakfast and lunch. My students have disabilities including learning disabilities, emotional disabilities, and autism (to name a few). With the growing age of technology and the immediate gratification children receive in the 21st century, they are having increased difficulty remaining engaged within the "typical" classroom setting. My students are a lively, kind, and endearing bunch of kids who require just a bit of extra attention and love.
These iPads will be tools to help students during reading instruction to utilize a multisensory approach to teaching reading and math. I currently only have one iPad (1st gen) and it does not always cooperate. There are wonderful apps in the apple store to assist with reading and math skills for students to learn how to manipulate items on a touch screen and use different techninques to complete skills. Many students with disabilities in reading utilize the iPad to read aloud stories to them to enhance their reading comprehension.
In addition, the iPads are positive reinforcements for behavior.
Students use the iPads during breaks when they have displayed positive behaviors which has reinforced motivation to complete classwork and interact with peers in an appropriate manner.
