This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Apple Computer pre- 21st century! It's what we have in our classroom. It's so old, my students stare at the screen waiting to connect to the Internet. Sometimes they never connect. Furthermore, this computer will not operate unless it is plugged into an outlet.
Spunky, spectacular, spontaneous, second graders fill my classroom with energy and curiosity.
Like all other children their age, they are captivated by technology and the opportunity to get their little hands on any device that will quench that thirst. My students attend a school like many others; lacking resources and the funds with which to attain current technology. It's been more than 13 years since our school has received laptops. In the past four years some classrooms have received just 2 pieces of technology that are to be shared by 20+ students and in many cases by as many as 35+ students.
My Project
Now more than ever it is of critical importance that my students receive the education that prepares them to compete in the job markets of tomorrow. The best way that I can help my students develop malleable knowledge of technology and how to implement it is to bring a variety of current technology into my classroom. It's essential that they are able to navigate transversely between devices. Having a computer that can travel the classroom and not worry about its battery charge can help my students access learning sites that will improve their knowledge and skills in all academic areas. Currently, amongst classroom favorite sites are NASA for Kids' Club, Renaissance Place, and Sumdog. For many of my students, access to technology is limited to the classroom, therefore it's up to me to optimize this experience. Having this portable Apple computer will also permit my students and me to gain access to the interactive online component of our math program, which is currently out of reach.
The technology we experience today is certainly not the technology that will surround us tomorrow.
My aim is to provide my students with the foundational knowledge they require, and thereby make adaptability to technology of the future a smooth transition.
