Technology in the classroom is no longer an extra, it is essential. An iPad offers an ever increasing catalog of applications. I can integrate technology into my lesson that will capture the attention of the students, especially those with learning challenges.
The reality is that it takes a great deal to get and keep the interest of students today.
Textbooks and lectures are simply not enough. Students need to be interested and engaged and if they are not, it is more difficult for them to learn. This is a particular problem if they have learning challenges. Our school community is a rural public high school in Hawaii. Many of my students have mild and moderate disabilities. We are in a high poverty area with many of students qualifying for free lunch. Many live with single parents, relatives, or foster parents. Despite these challenges, my students are bright, and many aspire to go to college.
My Project
In my marine science class, we can further our study of the environment, the weather, the water cycle and more using iPad applications. We can utilize water and tide information from NOAA. We can track hurricanes and other weather phenomena in real time. We can compare and utilize data from weather related apps to study global warming and its effects on our world. These projects are just the beginning of what we could learn about our planet utilizing an iPad and iPad applications.
Technology is essential in today's classroom.
Visual and hands-on applications create an interest in learning for the students. They want to interact with technology and iPads have an ever increasing library of educational applications. I'd like my students to have the opportunity to experience the same things students do at more well-funded schools. This single piece of technology could have an impact on hundreds of students within just a couple years. Please consider us for UPS match.
