Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
When I saw the iPad I thought "Wow, my students could get so much out of that!" Our school got a small batch of iPads to use and I got to experiment with one for a day. What I saw was an amazing tool that could be used for effective instruction and improved learning in my classroom.
I teach second grade in Arizona.
My students are all English language learners. 100% of them are Hispanic and qualify for free and reduced lunch. They have little to no technology at home. Their only exposure to technology is in the classroom. In my class, I currently have two non-functional, outdated computers. They don't even turn on anymore. My students come from high-poverty homes. Their parents are eager to help them at home but are at a disadvantage because of their language barrier. When my students walked into my room they were all reading at a kindergarten/first grade reading level. They have improved in their reading by at least 50%! They are hard workers and have shown that they have tremendous potential. We recently took our district assessments and they made significant growth.
My Project
An iPad in our classroom would be a great way to bring new technology to my students. For them to be able to use, and handle an iPad, would be an incredible experience. The Apps offered for the iPad can be used as interventions for reading, writing and math, all in one small tool! One of the many benefits to the iPad is that I can use it one-on-one, with a small group and I can even hold it up for all my students to see in whole group instruction. This would also be an incredible way to show them things that they have never seen before. Children who are learning a new language often do not have the vocabulary that other children have. For example, when I teach about other continents, they can't visualize the things I am talking about. With the iPad I can load photos and SHOW them what I am talking about. This would create a life-long memory ensuring that they truly own these words. It would be a way to take them to different places in our very own classroom.
This is a very important project to us.
It will bring new technology that they would otherwise never experience. It will bring new innovative ways to teach children that need every possible advantage to catch up. My students are at a disadvantage because of their language barrier and an iPad will help me close the achievement gap and get them at grade level by third grade.
