Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Our students are curious, innovative, energetic and funny. They are also labeled as low-income, low-performing and most qualify for free or reduced lunch. Our school is a mix of many different languages and cultural backgrounds with many Tongan and Samoan students, a small number of white/Caucasian, a small number of African American, Asian and the majority are Latino.
We have 220 6th graders but they are divided into Homerooms so we form a tight-knit community and we get to know them well.
They enjoy integrating arts, technology, guest speakers, games, hands-on materials and group work in whatever topic we are learning.
My Project
Our 6th-grade students learn all about Ancient Egypt, it is one of their favorite units and it involves hands-on learning, short films, art projects, and a research report. Last year, we were able to invite an organization called "Ancient Artifacts" to bring the curriculum to the students in a way we had not done before. We want our current 6th-graders to have the same opportunity but we have lost our funding.
A historian will bring actual artifacts from ancient Egypt and lead 5 sets of students through interactive story-telling to educate them on the afterlife.
Here is a description from their website, "our Egyptian presentation utilizes genuine artifacts and Egyptian mythology to demonstrate the perception of life and death held by the ancient Egyptians. This hands-on enrichment program helps the students appreciate the ancient Egyptians' outlook on natural phenomena, art, architecture, monotheism vs. polytheism, as well as the role of women in society."
Although our students love learning from their teachers, they especially love when an outside expert comes to deliver the information in a unique and fun way. They also love the chance to learn with other Homerooms rather than their everyday classmates.
