This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
As the premier alternative school in the district, our school exists to serve the unique academic, physical, social and emotional needs of students who are in a critical period of their lives as they move from adolescence to adulthood. All aspects of the school help prepare our students for success in college and encourage them to become thoughtful and contributing members of society.
I teach Special Education students and Science.
With my science classes, we are in need of supplies to extend the learning and provide additional opportunities for students to learn. My students are hot or cold when it comes to science and I'm creating projects that make it.
My Project
Students attending this trip will be provided with a culturally enriching experience that would not otherwise occur within the confines of our classroom. The connection to science and movement is a key focus of the trip along with our celebration of Black History Month.
A chance to attend this production at the Kennedy Center will expose our students to the historical relevance of one of the greatest African American dancers, Alvin Ailey.
Leaving the confines of our classroom to help bring this classic alive will help students to truly understand the importance of being able to put themselves in another person's shoes. Students will benefit from this trip because they will gain a deeper understanding and appreciation for a different form of dance, learn about the diversity of ballet, increase their critical thinking, and add a new cultural experience to their knowledge bank.
