Our School of Engineering is a public school with a learning environment focused on the integration of science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) designed to help students learn how to solve real-world problems.
It is one of 171 schools in the county and serves 400 students in grades kindergarten through fifth grade.
Of those students, 75.3% have received free/reduced-price lunch since 2009, 29.1% of students are considered as limited English proficient, and 12.6% are identified for special education. The number of AIG students has remained low, especially since 2010, with less than 15 students identified. In 2013, 58% of students scored at or above grade level on reading end-of-grade tests. Our under-served subgroups include Black, Hispanic, economically disadvantaged, and limited English proficient students.
My Project
As a classroom teacher I always had a “classroom pet.” It was an amazing way to teach responsibility and it was incredible to see how much my students really loved the pet. However, with allergies rising among children and the pandemic leaving things a bit unpredictable the last few years, a living breathing creature doesn't seem like the best choice.
Enter, the Roomba - we will name it, accessorize it, and in return it will teach us responsibility and STEM!
Students will be put in charge of walking it (aka turning it on), feeding it (aka making sure it's back on the charger), and taking it to do it's business (aka emptying the tray) and best of all train it (it is programmable).
Bringing this technology into the classroom means they can learn the intricacies of how this works!. They have a great deal of pride surrounding inquiry-based lessons that they can get high-quality hand-on learning and would be delighted with a Roomba!
