Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I teach Kindergarten in a low income, low performing school, in an area of very high need. The level of second language learners is higher at our school than any other in the district, yet we set and achieve amazing goals. We strive for excellence every day, even in the face of adversity. My students are hard working, committed to education, and excited to learn all they can! These children deal with a wide range of challenges, from poverty to homelessness to the difficulty that comes with learning a new language, yet they persevere! I fight to inspire these children every day, and having materials that could extend learning from school to home would mean the world to them, and to me.
With the growing budget crisis in California it is now more than ever that my students and I rely on the kindness of those around us to help create meaningful, memorable school experiences. I chose education as my profession because I love the feeling I get when my students become inspired, motivated, and excited to learn new things. In Kindergarten, my main challenge is to foster a love of learning, as well as to create a link between school and home, so that the passion my students are filled with during the day can carry over into the home.
Bringing a reading adventure into the homes of my students has proven to be challenging. The majority of parents do not speak, read, or write in English, and have few books or resources in the home to encourage their child's love of reading and literature. I want to create interactive literacy backpacks, that students can take home to share with their families, and cement the concepts they are learning in class. Students would take the backpack home for one week and share it with their family. Many students do not have any books in their homes, and bringing something special like a literacy backpack home would be a new and exciting experience for them. I hope to be able to create and maintain a love of reading at school and at home.
Every day, I have the power to shape my students' future. I instill and model a love of learning that lasts long after school is over, and by donating to this project, you will be able to share in that powerful experience. This project will allow my students to extend learning beyond the walls of the classroom, and bring the adventure inside a good book into their homes.
