Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
This year, I am teaching 25 amazing and energetic Kindergartners. Our school is located in a high-needs community and all my students receive free breakfast and lunch. Our resources are often limited.
One of my biggest obstacles this year is our outdoor recess area. I am teaching in a portable classroom. Right outside my room is a large enclosed area that is designated as my classroom's recess area. However, this area isn't really fit for play. The area is all concrete and there is no playground. We don't have any grass or soft surfaces for the children to play on. Everyday, the kids just run around in circles. The only additional play items I've been able to provide are tubs of sidewalk chalk. However, my two small tubs of chalk are nearly gone.
Due to the lack of structured play, the students are still getting hurt. The area my students play in is very small. Even an innocent game of tag or relay races results in possible injury. The students are bumping into each other and falling onto the concrete surface. We've had many bloody knees and elbows.
I am fearful of a student getting seriously injured or breaking a bone. I feel my students deserve a decent recess experience. They work hard everyday and they deserve time to socialize with their friends and just be kids.
I'm in desperate need of outdoor play materials for my students. I'm asking for an outdoor activity set that features jump ropes, balls, bean bag games and safety cones. In addition, I'm asking for two parachutes, so that we can do whole group activities. I'm asking for a group of balls for playing soccer or other games. Lastly, I'm asking for additional tubs of sidewalk chalk. The children really enjoy drawing pictures and making designs.
Please help my students be safe. Our current play area is an accident waiting to happen!! My students deserve to be safe in school and not have to go home with bruises, cuts and bumps. School should be a safe place. Please help me accomplish that goal.
