I am returning to fourth grade again after looping with my last class for fourth and fifth grade. The students in my new class have some building changes to get used to. Our school has changed from carpet to tile.
My students spend time on the floor during whole group meetings and group or partner work.
Many students prefer to stretch out and leave the hard classroom chair for much of the day. With our new tile floor, our options are much less comfortable when it comes to moving around the room.
My Project
Students spend seven hours a day at school, 180 days per year. Of those hours, less than two hours are spent at recess, in specials, or at lunch. That means students spend about 900 hours a year in the classroom.
Students need comfortable places to work, and opportunities to reset during the hard work of learning.
The materials here include comfortable places to sit and materials to help students reset through a tactile experience.
Sequin pillows and spiral glitter wands are a tranquil way for students to relax when their brain is tired or stressed. Lap desks and floor pillows are a perfect combination for working on hard tile.
