Our students are among the most resilient in the area. We are 90% free/reduced-price lunch and we service two emotional disabilities programs, and one functional skills group. Our school is part of an urban district which educates 30,000 students annually. We embrace everyone who comes through our doors with compassion, love, and acceptance. This year we are becoming a STEM school, and hope to use brain research strategies to help build smarter, happier community members who embrace their education to use as a means to a brighter future.
My Project
We have many students who come into school in a state of fight/flight/freeze. They have difficulty transitioning to the educational setting and regulating their bodies and brains to focus on school. Our district has been focusing on brain research, specifically the adolescent brain and trauma. We have learned that as a school we can create areas with specific items to help realign student's brains and allow them the change to calm down which eventually helps them to return to class. The mp3 players will be loaded with calming music such as nature sounds and meditations, and can also be connected to the mood lamps which offer soft lighting and reflect calming images such as water or clouds for our children who have sensitive sensory issues. The bean bag chairs are meant to be comfortable and form to the child's body, while the kaleidoscopes, etch-a-sketches, stress balls, and kinetic sand are meant to be tactile devices. The items are meant to reach the 5 senses and help calm the amygdala which helps regulate our emotions. We would like to set up a station for each grade to help our students emotionally and behaviorally regulate.
