Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students defy the odds. We are located in the South Bronx, within one of the poorest districts in the country. The poverty and violence rates in our neighborhood are sky-high compared to the rest of the state. Many of our students come to school because it is a safe place where they receive basic human needs.
Statistically, our students are not supposed to succeed, but if you took one step into our classroom, you can see that they are not another statistic.
These kids are motivated and love to learn! Unfortunately, our school is a tad bit outdated. We are still using chalkboards and poster paper to write down notes. We are using textbooks and outdated worksheets in our classrooms. I want to make school fun, live, and interactive. Our classrooms need to be revamped, and our kids need more programs to keep them out of harm's way outside of school. We need programs in sports, science, journalism, math, and music. We need to balance out the academics with the social aspects of life and help cultivate active exemplary citizens.
My Project
We know that several of our students have come from the island because of the destruction caused by Hurricane Maria. Many of these students left everything they had back in the island and started over from scratch. They have gone through emotionally taxing experiences, and many of them need a way to express themselves. Some write, others sing, others dance. We would like to get these experiences and release it all on stage. It would serve as a way to cope and get out the pain, and all that has built up inside of them. We are requesting a wireless mic system with several microphones to help with this performance.
We would like to have our "underground cafe" in a slightly larger stage this time around; our show consists of singing, dancing, and poetry from both students and staff.
We would like to move it to the auditorium where we can have more students watch and more students performing. This is a chance for some of our displaced Hurricane Maria students to express themselves artistically and introduce themselves to their peers. Some will write poems about their experiences, and others will sing. It is much easier to manage a show, who comes off and goes on, when there are multiple mics available. Having wireless mics also allow students to move around freely on stage while they present their poems. It's a way to let their emotions out to their peers, and create something impactful out of all the destruction caused by the Irma and Maria.
