American Revolution Graphic Novels

My students need "Rebels: A Well-Regulated Militia" for an in-class unit on the American Revolutionary War. This is a historical graphic novel series that places a focus on the revolutionary struggles faced by the common man.

My Students

Students at KMS create a diverse community. Coming from a lower-income neighborhood in Upstate NY, 100% of our students receive free breakfast and lunch. Economic status is often a factor that prevents my students from gaining access to diverse forms of printed material.

I know that when they go home, many of my students face challenges that children should not be forced to face.

I want to ensure that when they enter my classroom, my students have nothing short of best learning experience. My students may have many difficulties in their lives, but obtaining a high-quality education should never be one. I strongly believe that access to a wider range of material will help my students to become more literate, 21st century learners.

My Project

Socioeconomic status is the leading factor that limits my students and their ability to experience a wide variety of media. Many children are unable to gain access to wide-ranging media such as video, newspaper or graphic novel content.

I make it a point in my classroom to expose my students to as many different styles of media throughout the school year.

For our American Revolution Unit, I am hoping to provide my students with access to a graphic novel series that is based on historical events. It highlights the various challenges faced by regular Americans throughout the war, placing a focus on the Green Mountain Boys, freedmen, women and the daily life of American and British soldiers and would provide my students with access to an unparalleled level of immersion in our course material.
