My students are creative, energetic, and very busy. Each student here majors in an artistic discipline, either visual art, vocal or instrumental music, drama, technical theater, or dance, and each student receives several hours of arts instruction every day, in addition to our regular academic curriculum.
It is always difficult for me to describe a "typical" student, because our student body is extremely diverse.
They come to us from every part of New York City, sometimes commuting great distances in order to take advantage of our specialized arts programming. I am continually impressed by their collective talent and determination, and I hope to do everything possible to give them an engaging curriculum.
My Project
After reading numerous classic American texts, my students will end the year with a unit focused on contemporary texts. Students will be divided into book groups, and each group will read a different contemporary text, ranging from non-fiction to fiction to drama. While we have some of these books on hand, we could use more.
I have selected these titles because I believe students will find them engaging, challenging, and relevant.
I'm excited to offer students the opportunity to read texts written by women as well as texts that deal with issues of race, gender identity, and the use of technology in our lives.
