I teach at a small, rural elementary school in the foothills of North Carolina. The majority of our students come from low socioeconomic backgrounds, yet our school has strong parental involvement. The number of extra resources we have in the classroom to use with students is limited. "American Idols" is a proposal to bring quality literature into the classroom to assist in making reading and social studies exciting for all students.
Based on the popular television reality show "American Idol", students view idols as only being performers. But who are the real American idols? During this unit, students will take a historical trip to identify idols in American history who have directly and indirectly impacted the formation of our society. Through the readings of biographies and autobiographies, students will examine how men and women throughout history have made significant contributions to all subject areas. As third graders are expected to master social studies objectives related to identification of American leaders and reading objectives related to non-fiction comprehension, "American Idols" provides students with an opportunity to practice skills needed for mastery of both areas simultaneously. The use of selected biographies and autobiographies will allow students to participate in literature circles, make comparisons among selected idols, and create multi-media presentations on individuals. The project will culminate with a living wax idol museum, in which students will assume the identity of one American idol.
I feel this will be a valuable experience for students as they will be utilizing comprehension skills during their readings and presentation skills during the living wax idol museum. Students will benefit from having the additional literature in the classroom for research, pleasure reading, and supplementary resouce material.
