Do you know the National Anthem? Can you sing more than the first few words of America the Beautiful? How about Camptown Races, Erie Canal, or Home on the Range? These songs, and many others, define America's past. They praise the pioneers, settlers, and dreamers of this country. They describe the work ethic and determination required to fulfill a dream. Educators know that students learn in a variety of ways. Song and music is a wonderful way to learn new information. (After all, how did you learn your ABC's?) Preserving these songs is important; learning from them even more so. Over 100 chorus students at my middle school in rural South Carolina study different cultures from around the world through song. Why not our own? MENC, the National Association for Music Education, has published a songbook, Get America Singing...Again! (Vol. I and II) These songbooks contain over 80 songs that our students should know. We want to purchase 20 copies of each and one teacher copy. Thank you for helping us learn American history through song.
