I am a fifth grade teacher at PS-165Q in Flushing, Queens. My class loves to learn about American History. As part of our social studies curriculum we learn about the history of the United States and what makes it so special. Since we don't have appropriate textbooks, I have found that National Geographic presents these topics in an informative and interesting manner. The children learn through text, maps, and photographs. It is almost impossible to purchase these books because the new reading libraries the city provides have reduced teachers' flexibility in ordering the materials we know the children love. National Geographic Reading Expeditions American Communities Across Time includes 6 books on each of 5 topics: A Whaling Community of the 1840's, A Homesteading Community of the 1880's, An immigrant Community of the 1900's, A Suburban Comminity of the 1950's and Communities Across America Today. This class set would bring American History to life for my class this year and for many years to come. Thank you for your interest in our children.
