Do you remember what it was like the first time you read a book that you couldn't put down? Some of my students have not yet discovered books that capture their imaginations, but they have also not yet met the American Chillers series.
Our students are elementary age and are excited to learn.
Our urban district really needs to stretch the available funds. Our students love to read but the school has limited books available for them. Many of our students come from impoverished backgrounds and don't have a great selection of books at home.
My Project
We are requesting the American Chillers book series. American Chillers and Michigan Chillers are a series of books written by author Johnathan Rand. The series started in February 2000 as a Michigan-only series and expanded to a national focus in December 2001 with "Michigan Mega-Monsters". According to the author, the American Chillers book series will continue through all fifty states. The book absolutely hooks young readers and builds their interest in reading the entire series. My goal is to get my students hooked on reading by getting them hooked on the American Chillers series. Here are some of the titles we'd be receiving: Michigan Mega-Monsters (2001): 3 kids are at a summer camp full of monsters and must help a mad scientist to fight them. Ogres of Ohio (2002): A brother and a sister find magical artifacts and must keep them safe from ogres who will use them to destroy the world.
The achievement gap between children from lower socioeconomic backgrounds and those from more affluent backgrounds is getting larger all the time.
This project will help me to give my students the chance they need to be better at reading!
