American Chillers - Oh the Horror
My students need a set of American Chillers books by Jonathan Rands to "scare" them into reading.
Have you read anything "scary" lately? The children in my middle school library love to read "horror" books.
A snapshot of our middle school shows a diverse high-need school comprised of about 1,100 students in grades six to eight.
Half of our student population receives free or reduced priced lunch. More than half of our students receive support services in addition to their core classes. Many of our students are not native English speakers.
For many of my students, the only library they will ever visit is our school library. I try to expose my students to new literature and to hopefully develop a life long love of reading. I do not have enough of the American Chiller books to keep my students satisfied.
Johnathan Rand's books are quickly snatched from the display shelf. The few books in the American Chiller series that I have have become worn from frequent use. With shrinking book budgets, often funds for the library collection are a low priority.
Having a set of the American Chillers series will encourage my students to read, they might even be "scared" not to.
With your help, my student will be ready and eager to reach their reading goals!
