P.S. 23 in Queens is a unique school in the New York City Department of Education. Comprised of six sites, which are housed within day treatment agencies and hospital facilities, P.S. 23 creates a safe learning environment for students with severe emotional and behavioral disorders, students with multiple disabilities, and health impaired students. Our students come from all five boroughs and parts of Long Island; 70% of them are eligible for the free lunch program.
This academic year, at the P.S. 23 site housed at the Queens Children's Psychiatric Center, we are launching a drama and media arts program in the middle and upper schools that serve a population of approximately 90 students with severe emotional deficits and learning disabilities. In addition to being a highly motivating activity for our students, the making of drama and media art requires collaboration, focus, and creativity. We believe the integration of this program will enable our students to develop the social skills, self-discipline, self-esteem, and communication skills that are vital to their ability to become literate and productive members of our society.
As the culminating activities of our first year, we plan to present two student-created video presentations at our school's Literacy Fair late this Spring. One will be an original dramatic piece and the second will be an expository/documentary piece. Both presentations will explore the theme ?America the Beautiful: This Land is Our Land.? In order to enable the students to create these projects, we are need of a computer that is capable of editing these video projects.
We believe the infusion of images, video, and music into our students' academic projects will help the young people at P.S. 23 better explore themselves and their worlds. An Apple iMac would be an investment in their future.
