Amazing Outdoor Classroom!

My Students

I have always had a diverse set of students every year. It is part of the reason that I love to teach. Every year the new group of students brings lots of experience and backgrounds to share. We are a middle school located on the east side of town. About fifty percent of our school population receives free or reduced-price lunch. Most students speak a second language and being 7th graders, they are very curious and spontaneous.

Coming out of the pandemic I think it is even more important to teach students how to cultivate healthy lifestyles and what kinds of things will help them to have a healthy balanced life.

My Project

The students have been working on our school garden to learn about how to grow and maintain a garden. We are just starting to delve into research of how to maintain the fruit trees and to grow healthy vegetables.

Our current picnic benches have fallen apart and I would like to be able to conduct class in the garden with the students.

This way we are discussing what we see and do without having to run back and forth from the classroom to the garden. We are currently working on giving the entire garden a face lift and are very exciting about what the students will be doing.
