This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students are dedicated, hardworking and inquisitive! The absolutely love math these days, although it was not always this way. At the beginning of the school year, many expressed that they did not like mathematics. As the year has progressed, we have definitely experienced a shift in mindset.

Our school is located in central Fresno, which is saturated with crime and gang activity.

Yet, despite these circumstances, my students arrive to school focused and ready to learn. Many speak about crime in their neighborhoods and express that education will give them a better future.

All of my students love learning, although their learning styles vary greatly. Students in my class are met at their ability level. We incorporate small group instruction, group work, independent practice and a variety of learning strategies all to ensure each student's learning needs are met. They are an extremely dedicated class who really pushes themselves. I am so lucky to be their teacher!

My Project

The use of math journals is an important component of our math lessons. Students use their math journal to write down the learning objective, math vocabulary and strategies for solving. They also use their math journal to practice these new math skills while easily referring back to their notes. We also use whiteboards and whiteboard markers to check for understanding.

The data collected using these tools will determine what differentiated activity each student will engage with next.

Students will either engage in independent practice, group work or small group using a variety of strategies.

These materials will help keep students engaged and focused on the learning. Which will in turn help ensure that all students are met at their level and supported where they are in their math journey!
