This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
Do you remember the person who first sparked your love of reading? I do! I was 5 years old and my family's next door neighbor gave me three full crates of books her granddaughter no longer read. "You can get lost in a book" she would always say. Scanning through the books I found a book that is my favorite to this very day- Mufaro's Beautiful Daughters by John Steptoe.
The pictures were amazing, and the characters looked just like me!
I found this book in my school one day and remembered that feeling I had years ago. My students saw my excitement and wanted to know more. After explaining it to them, they wanted to read it.
Books can take children to a far away land, all while never leaving their favorite reading corner. It only takes one special book to connect with, and a person to help ignite that spark, which will provide a love of reading that lasts a lifetime.
My Project
The books that I have chose to incorporate in my library will be made available for all students. They range in topic, and include diversity. There are also books that touch on certain issues that happen in the daily lives of children. They may need to see what it means to share. They may can find ways to relate to a child riding the bus. Having books that children can relate to makes reading more enjoyable.
Not only will these books be made available for leisure reading, but they can also tie into curriculum being used in the class.
For instance, Chocolate Me by Taye Diggs can be used during the topic All About Me and when discussing how each student is unique in their own way.
