Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students are inquisitive, engaging fourth graders. They are curious students who love to ask questions and extend their learning. Our classroom is a warm and welcoming community of learners. These amazing young people bring their cultural backgrounds into our class of learners to create a diverse classroom community.
Our 3rd through 8th graders and their families chose to attend this school to be a part of our wonderful, small school learning environment.
I teach at a public magnet school with less than 400 students in 3rd-8th grades, which provides a unique opportunity for upper elementary and middle school students to share the same campus and school community. As a school of choice instead of a neighborhood zoned school, we have students enrolled from throughout the district's different school zones.
My Project
I am requesting a gift certificate for First Book Marketplace. First Book is a nonprofit organization that provides discounted merchandise to eligible educators, including books. As a teacher at a Title I school, where many students are from low income households, I am already an eligible First Book member. The books available from the First Book Marketplace are up to 90% off market prices. Because of this, the dollar amount for this project will stretch farther than it would if I purchased books from a traditional book vendor. It also means inventory can vary, and the books available now may change when this project funds and I make my final purchase. In the past, I have purchased amazing new books such as All Are Welcome, Not Quite Narwhal, I Pledge Allegiance, Islandborn, A Different Pond, and All the Way to Havana.
#classroombookaday is an online movement to read a picture book every day for all 180 days of the school year.
Jillian Heise started #classroombookaday to build classroom community, create joy in reading, and share 180 stories with students. Magic happens in the conversations and shared experiences we have about the books we read. The funds for First Book will allow me to choose picture books to add to our classroom library for our #classroombookaday read aloud time and for students to read independently.
