Amazing Books in the Art Room: A Partnership in Imagination!
Help me give my students these amazing art books! Encouraging literacy in the art room by using books is a great way to explore the elements of art, to celebrate the art of illustrators and to stimulate imagination!
The students of our elementary school are excited about the arts. Last year was the first year our school had the funding to hire a full time art teacher. The students went from having art only half a year to a full year program. Now, each student receives 50 minutes of art a week! They are excited to create art and are buzzing with excitement on art day.
They are not satisfied to merely draw or paint.
They want clay. They want paper mache'. They want opportunities to build. Last year, as a school, we built a five foot robot out of cardboard, circuits, dc motors that rotate with working lights. They want to make sculptures. They are innovators, inventors and dreamers. I am so fortunate to lead them.
These inspirational books will provide excellent ways to incorporate art history, different cultures, and reading in our art curriculum. Many of the books are about famous artists such as Jackson Pollack in the book Action Jackson! Some books help our artists learn to trust and create their own ideas and imaginings such as The Dot. Other books help our young students to express themselves through art such as My Pen.
I often use books as a starting point for our young students because books incorporate beautiful illustrations, and get the kids excited for the art we are about to create.
Books are an excellent way to peak students' interest while encouraging kids to use their imaginations without a screen. Books with a variety of styles of illustration help our students discover their own artistic style as they are exposed to the many different media choices, colors, lines and shapes used. Books are art, and they belong in our classroom!!
