My Students

My wonderful fifth graders call central New Mexico home. Our school is located in the biggest city in NM, in a residential neighborhood near a high school and many businesses. My students are enthusiastic, kind, and eager to learn. One of my favorite parts of our school is the amount of diversity! My school has students from many backgrounds and from families speaking languages from around the world! We also have a large population of Native American students representing several different tribes.

With such diversity comes amazing strength, learning opportunities, and unfortunately some additional challenges.

My students can struggle with engagement in school. Also, over 99% of the students at my school qualify for free and reduced lunch. By helping this project come to life I know that my students will be excited about learning and I hope to change how they see themselves: as true scientists!

My Project

As my amazing astronomers blast off from plant earth to explore worlds unknown, having the materials they need to make these experiences come to life will increase engagement, understanding, and retention of some tough scientific concepts!

My students will walk into a completely transformed classroom!

Stars will cover the walls! Planets will hang from the ceiling! Engagement and excitement will be through the roof! We are requesting brand new books about space at a variety of reading levels, supplies for hands on projects investigating our solar system and general classroom supplies to support their learning!

My students use follow a wonderful, hands on curriculum. However, I don't have any of the materials needed to provide the experiences students need to learn. They need supplies to use flashlights indoors to understand how the position of the light affects the time shown on the clock. Then, students take their shadow clocks outside to see how the position of the Sun can tell them the time of day. Next, students make a paper model that helps them visualize the Earth’s yearly orbit around the Sun. They use this model to understand why some constellations are only visible during part of the year. Then students use a styrofoam ball as a model of the Moon and a flashlight as a model of the Sun to gain a better understanding of how the interactions between the Sun and Moon are responsible for the Moon’s phases. students draw out the planets in our Solar System with chalk on the playground. Then, they play a racing game, running to each planet, reinforcing the names, order, and relative distances between the planets. Finally, students plan a space mission to another planet outside our Solar System based on the amount of heat and light that reaches the planet’s surface. Once students plan their space mission, they will reflect on what our Sun would look like from this far-away planet.
