Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Many of our students don't have the minimal art supplies such as crayons, scissors and extra paper at home. Their only opportunity to create art and further their right brain thinking is by having an art program at school that challenges their creativity and exposes them to cultural diversity.
I teach K-5th grade Large Group Art to about 937 students.
I integrate reading, math, science and social studies in all lessons. About 5% of our students are in special education, nearly 75 % of our students are socially and economically disadvantaged. We have students who are in foster care, homeless, others have parents who have died or are in prison. School is their safe haven where they get to flourish and not worry about the problems at home. We are planning on having a community art exhibit at our school to encourage unity through our diversity. The more we learn about our world the more we learn about ourselves and our possibilities.
My Project
This year we are exploring creating 3D artworks using color theory, perspective, techniques and applications. We plan on holding a 3-D art show to share a cultural evening with students and families in our community. We have a diverse group of ethnicites that learn the value of positive interactions with people from other cultures when we convene together. This show is very important to us. We will be studying cool and warm colors and how the brain sees color in 3-D. We will be using the special 3-D holographic glasses. Our brushes are 8 years old and have literally fallen apart preventing us from painting.
We would like to explore the Japanese printmaking art form called Gyotaku and would like to order a set of fish and animals that we will paint, print, and add details to with our new paint brushes. This is a great project to do with our special education students too.
Please help us to help ourselves become great artists!
We have students who need art to be successful citizens as this is the talent that has been given to them.
Some of our students use art as a form of communication and expression. Finally the joy of having completed something well when nothing else in your day is going right is priceless. Thanks again.
