Celebrate Black Teachers and Students

This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.

My Students

Our students are incredible! My students amaze me on a daily basis. They bring such joy, creativity and enthusiasm to every project in art. I love to see young artists at our school really make a personal connection to art materials and prompts. Once they’ve mastered a new skill or material, they often take off with their own ideas for themes and subjects to explore. Recently, after completing an abstract sculpture project using paper strips and glue sticks, one first grader requested extra time to create an entire wardrobe in paper - including designer watch, bag and headband! Another first grader made a diorama of her room and family with paper and glue adding details with pencil.

I am inspired by my students’ resilience, intellect and inspiration with each new project we create together.

My Project

The shelf and numerous art books will make up a student-friendly Art Library to enrich art lessons throughout the year, to teach artist histories, and to provide a quiet nook that artists can read in if they finish a project early.

The inclusion of this library in the art room will promote a love of reading in our kids and support their growth in literacy.

The titles I have selected reflect my students' interests, community and experiences and tie into their art curriculum for the year. I truly believe that all teachers are literacy teachers - even in art class!
