Our school is located near downtown Henderson. The community consists of low-income apartments, older homes and some newer homes.
The population is mostly low economic backgrounds with 100% of our students receiving free breakfast and lunch.
All students visit the library each week. They love books and lots of positive attention. With the many obstacles that these students face, they struggle with meeting educational goals. From the moment they walk into our library, they feel welcomed, safe and encouraged. I may not be able to control what their world is like outside of the school day, but I can provide them with a positive and safe environment.
My Project
These alphabet materials will help to reinforce the skills that Kindergarten students need to become successful readers. Each week, we will start our Library lesson with a song from the ABC Sing Along Flip Chart and use the Alphabet Puppets to encourage participation.
Having the variety of alphabet activities, like the Chicka Chicka Boom Boom book and Activity Tree, will engage students in their learning.
These materials will ensure that students are learning their letters and letter sounds that are so very important in developing a strong foundation for reading.
