My students need a variety of choices when it comes to high interest but low level books. Our population hails from numerous countries, speaks more than a dozen first languages and experiences every walk of life. In spite of their differences, these learners share a desire to gain literacy, grow academically and graduate from high school.
My students look around our classroom and see a reflection of the world, but they don't understand that others have struggles and insecurities, too.
The books in this collection will serve to provide them with alternatives lines of thought and open their eyes to how others might overcome challenges.
My Project
This project serves two purposes. First, literacy in a second or third language is best served through a wide selection of high-interest, low-level books from which students can choose topics they like. Additionally, this project will add numerous memoirs and fictional stories about the life of an adolescent.
My goal in this project is to build a culture of reading that will transcend our classroom community and develop a love of reading that will last my students' lifetime.
By providing a variety of high-interest/intermediate-level book choices within our classroom library, we can meet the disparate needs, interests and reading levels of our most apprehensive readers.
Research has proven that choice reading programs encourage students to select books they enjoy and drive a desire to read everyday. These choices will also extend into our writing program. Students will select and produce book projects that matter to them. Throughout this process, teachers will provide authentic guidance, feedback and support. Thank you for your interest in our classroom library project.
