My Students
I had the privilege of becoming a teacher just two years ago. Everyday, my students inspire me to learn new and exciting ways to guide them in their journey of learning Spanish. My teaching is focused on developing communicative-competency. The goal is for students to actually acquire Spanish, not just learn about the Spanish language by studying verbs and vocabulary.
For many students, my classroom is their only contact with the Spanish language and Hispanic and Latino cultures.
In our small community where there are not many Latino or Hispanic residents, I feel like my job as a Spanish teacher is even more important. I feel that not only is my job to prepare them to be able to speak Spanish, but also to be culturally sensitive adults who are open to connecting with different kinds of people and who are able to understand a variety of cultural perspectives.
My Project
I will use this money to enroll in an online conference for foreign language teachers. The conference is a unique experience to watch videos of master teachers present on a wide range of topics that affect the foreign language classroom. I'll be able to learn at my own pace from home, and I'll be able to watch and re-watch the videos as many times as I'd like during the three-week conference window. Plus, each presenter will offer Q & A time, so I'll have the opportunity to engage directly with these experts as well.
The conference offers expert advice and strategies relating to classroom management and assessment, as well as how to help students develop their proficiency in the target language.
