I need Reading and Writing Strategies books to collaborate with my team on developing strategy groups and refining my teaching based on the needs of my students.
As an urban school teacher with a large population of English Language Learners and eighty-two percent of students living in poverty, we are faced with a variety of challenges daily. Most concerning is the number of students who have experienced horrific trauma in their young lives. While I am unable to change their home environment, I take great pride in providing my first graders with a positive and safe school experience. I am very fortunate to teach in a school where expectations for children and staff are high.
Students at our school and in my classroom rise to meet our high standards, both academically and behaviorally.
They are active, eager, and engaged. Our students are spirited scholars working hard to overcome their challenges and growing to be the best that they can be.
My Project
The Jennifer Serravallo's strategies books are resources to be used as I work with our school-based literacy specialist and team teachers. We are following a peer coaching model where teachers develop strategy groups and deliver instruction based on the needs of students. Teachers then video themselves instructing small groups and share these videos with others to reflect on their teaching.
This professional development project will have a dramatic impact on my teaching as I will more accurately target my instruction to meet the needs of my readers and writers.
These books will support me in my work with peers, as well as with the readers and writers in my classroom. I will continue to grow as an educator and refine my skills in teaching English Language Arts.
