I teach at the 3rd most diverse high school in the nation- one of 8 large high schools in Anchorage Alaska. I teach grades 9-12 band and jazz, as well as ukulele and IB music. Our school is one of the largest in the state, with around 1800 students.
I love watching these students thrive and work hard towards musical goals, many of whom go on to study music in college.
These kids are the reason I keep teaching. To see the light bulb flicker on is a highlight of my day. I love watching not only their musical growth but also their growth into contributing members of society and becoming good humans.
Most of my projects are to replace 40-60 year old band equipment that has been around since the school was built and desperately needs replacing.
My Project
This project aims to support my jazz band saxophonists by purchasing new mouthpieces specifically designed for use in jazz band.
These mouthpieces will help my students achieve a more characteristic jazz sound.
The throat of these mouthpieces is designed for jazz band alto and tenor players. This will change the tone, projection, and pitch of the instrument. These mouthpieces will be checked out to students for use in the jazz band for rehearsals and concerts. Once the year is finished they will be cleaned, sanitized, and checked out to next year’s saxophone players. Thank you for considering donating to my class protect!
