This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
This past October, my second and third graders completed their folk dancing unit, and oh did we have fun!
Professional musicians visited our school and our young dancers had an opportunity to folk dance to live music!
I sent the music that we had been practicing for months to our guest musician friends ahead of time. These expert fiddlers brought our folk dancing to a whole new level, and their notes just seemed to fly and float through the air, needing no printed page! I was so elated that my students had received the opportunity to experience up close the stringed instruments that brought the music to life. As I watched my students perform "Sasha," in boots and western attire, I had a stronger admiration for fiddlers, and it was apparent that I had encountered some of the best students and musicians on the planet!
My Project
This past school year Donors Choose surprised every 4th and 5th grader with their own soprano recorder! This upcoming school year (2020-2021), I would like to introduce the alto and tenor recorder to our 5th graders.
The alto and tenor recorder will allow our students to learn about harmony, play duets, and become familiar with different types of recorders.
Students will continue to read music, learn basic music theory, and play more challenging music.
We will begin our Soprano Recorder Karate Unit in September. When we complete our unit, we will continue to use the soprano recorder as a supplement to other music lessons, and some of our advanced players will get the opportunity to play the alto or tenor recorder.
