Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Living in communities where shootings are commonplace, life altering and socioemotional issues develop quickly for young, developing minds. In the case of my school, all of the students live in dangerous neighborhoods where walking on the wrong side of the street can lead to a beating or shooting. This year alone, one of the beginning band students was injured and forced to withdraw from school.
Despite these hardships, the students are positive, energetic, and desire to be successful.
As a music educator, I wish to use music as a way to not only give my students a well-rounded education, but to help them improve their communities.
My Project
Working on challenging music, my students are having trouble performing due to the limitations of their instruments. As a result, they get frustrated quickly because of how difficult their instrument is making their music experience. Playing on extremely cheap mouthpieces due to a nonexistent school budget, these students have outgrown their equipment.
Without these mouthpieces, achieving success will be increasingly difficult.
The mouthpieces will be used everyday and will create a more enjoyable music experience because the instrument will not limit their abilities. With these mouthpieces, my students will have an easier time playing the music being learned in class. Morale will be increased and the whole ensemble will benefit from an improved overall sound.
