My students are so cool! I get to see the 17 sweet students everyday. Each of the students I serve have special needs. As individuals with different abilities, they have struggles that most of us cannot imagine. Adding to their struggles is attentiveness.
Sitting in a chair is not always a conducive way for all students with special needs to learn.
Some of my students have ADHD, ADD, Other Health Impaired, Autism, Specific Learning Disorder, and/or Intellectual Disability. To sit in a topical school chair is not comfortable to them. They are often not able to sit, focus, concentrate, learn, and provide a performance that is indicative of their level of knowledge. If they are not comfortable or able to fidget, everything else is lost on them. They are attempting to fulfill their basic needs first, before anything else can happen. Flexible seating is an answer
My Project
I have a classroom that is populated by exceptional students with different abilities. Some of the students' needs include sensory. Wobble chairs and stools would help provide the students' needs and help their focus when receiving direction instruction as well as working independently. Learning cannot happen until behaviors are under control.
When there are sensory needs, it's difficult for the students to meet those needs within a classroom that has, what is considered, a 'typical' classroom setting.
The typical school chairs, and even kitchen chairs, do not provide what the students' needs. With flexible seating, they do not have to sit still. The students would be able to satisfy the sensory needs of their body allowing their mind to open up and learn.
