Ms. Wolf from Milwaukee WI is requesting flexible seating through DonorsChoose, the most trusted classroom funding site for teachers.
My students need various alternative seating options to help with focus. I am requesting gaming chairs, a balance ball, and stretch foot bands.
This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My students are a group of 19-21 year olds with Autism. They are an amazing group of young adults working on vocational, social, and communication skills to help them in the classroom as well as transitioning into life after high school.
We try to do as much hands on and experience learning as possible.
But sometimes sensory regulation and behaviors get in the way of their learning. Your support will help us get past many barriers the students encounter on a daily basis!
The rocker chairs, exercise ball, and chair bands will provide the gross motor and vestibular stimulation necessary to prepare my students to sit quietly and listen or complete independent work. These materials will not directly teach my students new skills, but they will help prime my students for learning in all content areas and with many daily living skills. For example, if one of my students is pacing around the room and rocking against the counter one of my aids can have the student sit in the rocker and work one on one while I continue to teach. It also helps to reduce distractions for the other students in the room while instruction is taking place.
The donations for this project will improve my classroom by reducing the amount of behavioral issues, because I will be able to provide the appropriate stimulation that my students need, but cannot voice, due to their disabilities.
With less behavioral issues, we can increase our learning and time on task. I'm looking forward to seeing my students happier and ready to learn.
