Have you ever sat at a conference, in a class, or at a training, and thought, "this chair is really uncomfortable"? I have! I would love for my students to have options for seating so that they don't have to feel this way. I believe more seating options will lead to greater focus in the classroom.
My students are wonderfully independent, curious, confident, and driven.
They know who they are and what they like. If I ask them to give their opinion on something, they give it wholeheartedly. Recently, I asked them for input on how the seating in our room should be arranged and they had many ideas that I never would have thought of (one idea was to arrange the desks in rows and columns since we are studying arrays). I would love to give my students the opportunity to exercise their independence and allow them to choose the best place to sit based on their needs.
My Project
I am requesting a variety of seating options for my students, such as a bean bag chair, a Stabili-T-Stool, wobble chairs, balance balls, and core balance discs. The variation in seating options is meant to give my students choice, as well as serve the varying needs of as many students as possible at any given time throughout the day. The bean bag chair will provide a comfortable place to sit for those students needing an escape from the hard plastic chairs. The T-stool and wobble chairs will help students to calm wiggles, focus more, and improve posture. The core balance discs are great because they can be used on chairs or on the floor. Core balance discs and balance balls help students to burn excess energy as well as improve posture and balance. The goal is to provide my students access to an array of seating options. My hope is that the students will be able to choose the seating option that best fits their needs for the activity or lesson at hand.
Donations to this project will improve my classroom in many ways.
First, it will help make my classroom a student-centered space where students feel they are cared about and welcome. In addition, this project will provide my students with more resources and options that will help aid in their success. Last, this project will allow me to teach students how to be responsible, independent thinkers who can problem solve and make important choices.
