My Students

I teach in a district with high poverty/low income families and these young people can defy those challenges and go on to college or the work place--I've seen it year after year. But I want to give even more of them better opportunities.

Many of these perseverent, bright students struggle with reading and in conjunction with other accommodations, the choice of seating can add greatly to engagement.

Though some of my students may never leave this state, I can help them experience the world through literature, and I can only do that if they can understand and enjoy what they are reading.

My Project

Many of my students face struggles I can't change: poverty, mental illness, abuse, hunger, and many more. Sadly, a lot of these students also struggle to read at grade level. I want to do everything I can to see them succeed.

Studies have shown that alternative seating improves performance, comprehension, and retainment of material.

I want to provide this opportunity to all of my students via bean bag chairs for reading. This will allow more of my students to enjoy favorites such as Fahrenheit 451, To Kill a Mockingbird, Lord of the Flies, Things Fall Apart, The Lovely Bones, and many more.
